About Us
Our mission is to create a more inclusive, collaborative, and judgement-free space for girls in engineering, where they feel comfortable to explore and showcase technology that solves problems. We strive to shift the culture of the engineering space to one that empowers women to take on leadership roles of creating and innovating.
Our Story
We have long heard about and experienced the gender gap in engineering and technology. My friends and I saw it first hand, often being the only few girls in a class of around 20 kids. It begged the question, why? Why are there fewer girls participating and creating, and why are 40% of women with engineering degrees quitting or never even entering the field?
The answer to these questions lie in the words community and culture: how girls interact with other people in the space of engineering, what roles and tasks we take on, and how we are treated at a young age. That's where the idea for sheMakes came to mind: we need a community that can shift the male-dominated culture and provide a stronger space for girls in engineering and technology. We need to provide opportunities for girls to explore purposeful engineering as a leader who creates, ideates, and innovates.

Our Initiatives
Meetings
After school meetings to build communities in schools with time to create and explore creatively.
Makeathons
Explore
Makeathons that emphasize learning with guidance to introduce girls into engineering and technology. Make projects while learning to use Fusion360, Android Studio, and more.
Pursue
Makeathons to ideate or create projects that emphasize purposeful engineering with impact.
Showcases
Opportunities to showcase projects that girls make in makeathons to extend beyond an isolated community of girls to larger school communities. Girls can present projects to each other, classes, and schools. A database of projects can be found here!
